Manager, Work Allocation & Development

Total Compensation: $180K – $200K
Oakleaf Partnership is working with a prestigious global law firm to hire a Manager, Work Allocation & Development for their New York or Washington, D.C. office. This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in the professional development and talent management of legal professionals in a high-caliber, international firm.
About the Role
The Work Allocation & Development Manager will be responsible for ensuring that associates are staffed on matters in a way that balances business needs with professional growth opportunities. This role requires a strategic mindset, strong relationship-building skills, and the ability to work closely with key stakeholders, including staffing partners and leadership.
Key Responsibilities
Resource Management
- Ensure equitable, transparent, and consistent work allocation across associates.
- Manage staffing requests and collaborate with Staffing Partners to optimize workload distribution.
- Monitor and report on utilization and work allocation metrics.
- Conduct regular check-ins with associates to understand career goals, provide professional development support, and collect feedback.
- Assess capacity and ensure timely and efficient staffing of matters.
- Communicate effectively with all stakeholders regarding staffing initiatives and business needs.
- Escalate high-risk or sensitive staffing issues to senior leadership as needed.
Practice Management
- Work closely with practice leadership to monitor associate performance and career progression.
- Partner with the broader People Advisory team to support associates and partners in their professional development.
- Collaborate with Learning & Development teams to align training opportunities with business needs.
- Support firm-wide engagement initiatives to enhance the associate experience.
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- Experience in associate development, work allocation, or resource management within a professional services environment, ideally a law firm.(5+)
- Strong business acumen and the ability to assess staffing needs in alignment with firm priorities.
- Excellent diplomacy, negotiation, and communication skills.
- Strong project management and problem-solving capabilities.
- Proficiency in Excel and experience with resource management software is a plus.
- Ability to work flexibly, including outside standard business hours as needed.
